Health Select Committee opens inquiry into NHS deficits

Press notice setting out the terms of reference of an inquiry into NHS deficits. The Committee is to investigate the size, the causes and the consequences of the deficits, and the period over which these are to be balanced. As part of its assessment of the causes, the Committee will examine the role of local and central management and of Government policy, the contribution of turn-around teams and the impact of the funding formula. Written evidence received by Tuesday 6 June 2006 may be considered for publication ahead of the two oral evidence sessions planned before the end of July. No date is given for the end of the inquiry; it may run to the end of the year as evidence sessions are announced for the autumn, after the publication of the 2005/2006 audited accounts of trusts.
