OFT launches market study into PPRS

OFT press release announcing a market study into the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (PPRS).

The PPRS is a voluntary agreement negotiated (under the threat of statutory price controls) between the UK Department of Health and the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). It limits prices and profits earned on UK sales of branded medicines.

The study is to assess whether the PPRS is effective in meeting its stated aims: securing the provision of safe and effective medicines to the NHS at reasonable prices, promoting a strong and profitable industry and encouraging the efficient and competitive development and supply of medicines in the UK and in other countries. The study is expected to last at least until Spring 2006.
