Classified directory advertising services referred to CC

OFT statement of reasons (PDF, 15 pages) for making a reference to the Competition Commission for an investigation under the Enterprise Act 2002 into the supply of classified directory advertising services in the UK. The OFT suspects that there are market features which "prevent, restrict or distort competition". Whilst the OFT cites network effects, the Commission will presumably also need to examine whether any absence of effective competitive constraints for printed classified directory advertising services is due to the price controls currently in operation.

Update: The CC's invitation to submit evidence (PDF, 2 pages) was issued on Tuesday 12 April 2005.
