Central government funding for local bus services
Department for Transport announcement of grants totalling £20 million to local authorities in England to improve bus services. The responsibility for ensuring the compliance of the arrangements with the EC State aid rules (Article 87) rests with local authorities. The guidance (10 pages, PDF) for local authorities prepared by the Department discusses State aid issues in the basis of Council Regulation 1191/69 (consolidated, 11 pages, PDF). There is no mention of the possible impact of the European Commission's proposed changes to these arrangements.
