Clearance of aid to Irish language and culture broadcasting

DG Competition letter (11 pages, PDF) to the Irish Government clearing under State aid rules the Broadcasting Funding Scheme which enables the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland to use 5 per cent of net licence fee income to fund television or radio programmes on Irish culture and adult literacy, particularly in the Irish language. DG Competition considered that the aid was justified under Article 87(3)(d), which allows cultural purposes, and that it did not infringe other Treaty provisions such as free trade and non-discrimination.
