Government response to the Health Committee's report on independent sector treatment centres

Command paper (24 pages, PDF) setting out the Government's response to the conclusions and recommendation of the Health Committee's July 2006 report on independent sector treatment centres (ISTC). The paper reiterates, for the most part, points made in the Departmet of Health submission (HTML) to the Committee. The Government side-steps the question of evidence on the value for money of the ISTC schemes, which had been raised by the Committee, by suggesting that value for money is assured by the process each ISTC project goes through, including the use of competitive procurement to achieve "best value available in each scheme". The paper notes that it is for the Comptroller and Auditor General to react to the Committee's recommendation that the National Audit Office investigate the value for money of the ISTC programme.
