First / Hutchison Coaches (Overtown) bus merger clearance

Grounds (7 pages, PDF) for OFT's clearance of FirstGroup's takeover of the local and express bus operations of Hutchison Coaches, a £2.5 million independent operator in Lanarkshire. First Glasgow is the largest bus operator in North Lanarkshire and First also operates the Scotrail franchise.

The OFT applied the methods relied upon in previous Competition Commission inquiries to conclude that, for each of the overlaps, there was either enough competition from other operators or the extent of the overlap was insufficient to be likely to lead to a change of behaviour. For tendered services OFT found sufficient competition from other operators.
