Ofgem initial view on connecting Scottish isles generators

Ofgem consultation (7 pages, PDF) on an "initial view" to use a tendering system run by Ofgem to select developers to build interconnectors that would enable potential new generating plant on Orkney, Shetland or the Western Isles to export their power to the mainland grid.

The tendering system would be similar to the one chosen by DTI and Ofgem in March 2007 for connections to offshore power stations.

The rationale for a tendering system would be to encourage developers to come up with lower cost solutions, possibly with lower security standards than on mainland networks. The consultation paper does not identify any potential implications for demand located on the Scottish islands.
