Cancellation of Northern Ireland power purchase agreements

Ofreg (Utility Regulator/NIAUR) consultation (54 pages, PDF) on a proposed view that the implementation of a joint electricity trading and settlement area for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland satisfies the requirements for cancellation of the long-term generating unit agreements between NIE's power procurement business and the main power generators in Northern Ireland.

The terms of these agreements have been the subject of many complaints over the years, and have been blamed for high electricity prices in Northern Ireland. They can be cancelled when some requirements set in the contracts have been satisfied. The requirements seek to test for the existence of a trading and settlement system that can support a competitive wholesale market.
