Grounds for reference of EWS/Marcroft merger

OFT decision (15 pages, PDF) to refer the acquisition by English, Welsh and Scottish Railway of the rail freight wagon maintenance provider Marcroft Engineering to the Competition Commission under the Enterprise Act 2002's merger control provisions. The decision was announced on Monday 6 February 2006. The main grounds relate to the horizontal overlap in the ability to supply wagon maintenance services, with Marcroft being the main independent supplier and EWS the main in-house supplier. The Competition Commission website has a page about its inquiry into this merger.
