Suspension of independence of UK competition authorities?

Article by Robert Peston, the BBC's business editor, alleging (without giving sources) that the UK Government plans to abolish the independence of the Office of Fair Trading and the Competition Commission as regards merger control, so as to allow Lloyds TSB and HBOS to merge.

Scroll down to “UPDATE 12:34PM” for the relevant snippet in Peston's blog entry.

Under the Enterprise Act 2002, the UK merger control authorities are currently wholly independent of ministers except in relation to mergers in the media sector and cases where “the interests of national security” are at stake.
