No Ofgem requirement to install smart meters

Ofgem decision (42 pages, PDF) not to make major changes to the system of regulation of domestic metering following the February 2006 consultation (which had raised the possibility of re-bundling metering with distribution). Ofgem will encourage the adoption of interoperability standards (under the threat of mandatory standards to be imposed by Ofgem if necessary) and consider changes to the visual inspection requirements in order to facilitate the introduction of smart meters by suppliers on a commercial basis.
