National Grid accused of unfair foreclosure of gas meters

Ofgem press notice (2 pages, PDF) reporting that Ofgem has served a statement of objections on National Grid alleging infringement of Article 82 and the corresponding prohibition in the Competition Act 1998. The specific conduct complained of is not specified in the press notice, but is said to be connected to the making of long-term exclusive contracts with gas suppliers for the supply of domestic meters, which allegedly lock suppliers into National Grid for a significant share of their gas meter requirements. Ofgem proposes to involve third parties in the investigation in line with the OFT guidelines; interested third parties have until 5 pm on Wednesday 31 May 2006 to request a non-confidential version of the statement of objections.
