Article 2

Article 2 EC defines the "task" of the European Community.

The full text is available from Eur-Lex:

Some of the matters to be "promoted" are expressed in terms of an outcome that is desired (such as "a high level of employment"), whilst others are characteristics for which more is presumably always better (such as "raising of the standard of living").

Article 3(2) provides an additional "aim" to "eliminate inequalities, and to promote equality, between men and women".

Note: In June 2007 the European Council agreed to the principle of replacing Article 2 and Article 3 with a new formulation of the EU's objectives.
