Note on ECJ Advocate General opinions

In some cases heard by the European Court of Justice, an Advocate General (employed by the court and independent of the parties) is asked to prepare an opinion on the case.

This opinion is published. It is advisory only and is not binding on anyone. The Court gives its judgment some months later and may decide to disagree with some or all of the Advocate General's opinion.

The final judgment of the European Court of Justice is not attributed to any individual judges on the panel, and never discloses any minority opinions.
